How to Make a Pie!

I recently finished a fun (but a bit tedious) How To project in one of my classes! It was fun to explore a simpler and solely computer based style of illustration. Learning what worked and what didn't was a challenge, but I feel like it came out pretty good! Have a look, let me know what you think! Do you see something that you love or even hate? I would love to hear some feedback from my readers.

Here is the full poster, it's full size is 18" x 24" If you click on it you can see the full size with more detail:

Here are a few detail photos:

If you try out the recipe, let me know how it comes out!

Jessica Hische

Thanks to Friends of Type, I think I found one of my favorite designers! Jessica Hische does beautiful design, illustration and typography. I just clicked and clicked through her site and want to click more but I feel that I should probably do some of my own design homework (eek)! Anyways, here are a few of my favorite things that I just pulled from her site.

I just love the detail in this piece:

The colors in this sticker set are basically awesome:

If I could get my aunt's hair salon logo to look this awesome, life would be good:

Here is a beautifully detailed typeface she designed:

And here is a very pretty holiday themed poster, I'm excited for Christmas already:

Oil and Water

The BP oil spill is something that hits close to home with me. I'm compelled by the art that has come out of this awful disaster. It has inspired so many beautiful pieces. Here is another one! This one is done by Happiness Brussels, and all of the benefits of this project go to the Oil Spill and Coast Restoration Efforts. You can find the site dedicated to these posters here. I've posted a video to show the process of how they are actually using oil collected from the beaches to create these posters.

Here is the final product.

The Exquisite Book

This has been floating around the blog world quite a bit. It took me seeing it on about 3 different blogs to actually investigate what it is and I'm glad I did! It's a book based on a Surrealist game (I'm just shocked to even hear myself talking about the Surrealists) called the Exquisite Corpse. Basically they asked 100 artists to participate in the making of this book. They gave the first artist a prompt and they drew, the next artist only looked at the page right before his/hers and drew the next scene, each scene shares a horizon line and that's what ties each chapter together! I want this on my book shelf one day. Here are some images and a video promoting it!

Food as a Medium

While browsing my Google Reader (thanks Sandra for showing me how that works!) I stumbled on two print pieces that use food as part of the production on FPO. One is fun and silly, the other is serious and compelling. Let's get into it!

First a piece made by Beau Eaton for a competition by Greenpeace. His piece addresses the huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused by BP. He created these prints and then covered it in chocolate syrup to signify the oil. Unfortunately pouring chocolate syrup all over it means that the piece is not permanent, but here are some great photos of the work. I think it's quite effective.

On a lighter note, here is a poster based on that song by Katy Perry that gets stuck in everyone's head "California Gurls." This one is done by Excuses Design Collective and was just a fun project they decided to try out. The FPO post goes into more depth about the style they chose and why they used sprinkles. Check it out.

Makes me want an ice cream sundae a little bit.

We won!

Here's a shout out to everyone who voted for Marc and I like crazy over the last 5 days! We were just overwhelmed with support and love during the whole process. It is such a blessing to receive as a couple! A lot of you are asking what we won, so I'll tell you!

We won an hour and a half to two hour engagement photo session with Erin Woolsey which is a $300 value. She's a great photographer, if you didn't check out her work while you were voting, you definitely should! We probably won't get around to actually taking our pictures until Thanksgiving time at the soonest. I will keep you posted though.

We also won 50 free save the dates that will be designed by Wednesday Custom Design, run by Garett and Jessica Mayfield. I don't really know how much this is actually worth yet, but they are super talented people as well. I almost forgot to mention, all of these wonderful people are ACU Alum! A group I envy and will soon be a part of as well ;-)

If you voted for us (especially those of you who spammed your friends and voted daily [or more]) let me know! Maybe even shoot me an email with your home address in it =]

I will be back to blogging daily starting tomorrow!

Legos and Letterpress!

Recently I'm completely obsessed with Letterpress work thanks to a couple of projects I did recently that pushed me into exploring the style. It's gotten to the point where I've considered working at a print shop that uses lots of letterpress right out of school, it just seems so cool! Here's some letterpress done with legos done by Physical Fiction.

Fun stuff here people! Maybe one day I will letterpress!

I found this at swissmiss!

Salt and Pepper Shakers!

While doing research for a new project I was assigned today, I stumbled over these awesomely cute salt and pepper shakers by Jonathan Adler on the Dieline. My great Granny used to collect Salt and Pepper shakers, it's something my mom reminds me of every time we see a unique pair, so I always wonder if these would just be a great addition to her collection! Check them out.

I mean seriously these things are so cute and so elegant and the packaging is awesome (hence the feature on the Dieline). You can find these and several other cuties here!

Everee Wednesday Contest Sneak Peak

Marc and I entered a contest to win some free engagement pictures and Save the Dates. We got pretty creative, I think. Here's a glimpse of what we were working with. Come back Friday to see if we made it to the voting round and to see some more pictures from our fun shoot!

Design Work Life

Here's a blog that's great to follow.

Design Work Life posts multiple times a day during the week, and she always posts great stuff. Whenever I feel like I need to be inspired for anything, I make my way to her blog. She posts things in so many different styles and media that I'm pretty sure anyone can find what they are looking for! One of my favorite things she does regularly is the Monday Quick Links:

In her quick links she posts just a bunch of great stuff. It's really easy to miss these posts because there are no pictures, but don't ignore it! She links to more great inspiration, design must have's available to buy and really inspiring and informational articles. As you can see above, she even touches on the latest design scandal (the new Gap logo in this case).

I hope you enjoy this blog as much as I do!

Red Dirt Adventure Challenge

Last weekend a friend asked me to come out and photograph a race ACU Outdoor Club hosts called the Red Dirt Adventure Challenge (RDAC for short). It was an early morning and a beautiful day! The race consisted of a biking section and a running section. There were quite a few participants and everyone had fun. Here are some of the photos I took!

He raced in the Just for Fun category, and had a fun get up for his bike!

These were the trophies of the year. High quality ;-)

Congrats to the winners of the race! I'm glad I had the opportunity to help out even in a small way!

Oh Joy!

I love to follow other blogs! I think I will highlight one every once in a while that I think is a must follow!

Joy Cho posts beautiful things daily on her blog called Oh Joy! It's inspiring to see what inspires her! She is a very successful freelance designer. She also recently wrote a book with another blogger/freelancer called Creative Inc.

I recently received this book as a gift and can't wait to get into reading it! All the reviews have been great!

Harold's BBQ Sauce

Here is a project I did for my Packaging Design class. We redesigned a BBQ Sauce bottle for a local BBQ favorite, Harold's. We also designed 2 additional products, I chose to do Harold's Damn Hot Relish and a spice rub. Here are some photos taken by my professor Nil Santana of my final products.
